In this 3-day half time course the participants will learn basic of “Internet of Things” technologies by practical example by implementing a network connected model "Smart House". Breaking into ten (10) groups of four (4) students, each group will connect a various sensors and actuators to a number micro-controllers (similar to Arduino) which in turn will connect to an “IoT” server. Once the basic connectivity is established then the students will explore the interactions between devices that are only made possible by the “Internet of Things”.``
In this course the students will:
- Explore the world of microcontrollers
- Implement an IoT client on a microcontroller
- Develop an understanding and implement the logic that underpins a “Smart House"
- Programming experience (C like language) mandatory
- Understanding of internet fundamentals desirable
- Experience with microelectronics desirable
- Each participant to bring their own laptop (Mac OS X, Windows or Linux)
Dr. Greg Wickham is the Facilities and Systems Team Leader in the Visualization Core Lab at KAUST. He received his PhD in Computer Science from Deakin University, Australia in 1997, and joined KAUST in 2009. He has extensive professional experience in Network Management, High Performance Networking, Computer Systems Administration and Visualisation Technologies. In addition to his professional achievements he has a long history with electronics and microcontrollers, embedded systems and Linux.
Peter Rautek is a Research Scientist at the Visual Computing Center at KAUST. He is passionate for making things manifested in joint electronics projects and mobile apps like Epic (mobilesynergies.org), uberdice (uberdice.thomashollt.com), and Visual Experience, a KAUST seed funded and award winning startup focusing on virtual reality experiences. Peter founded, and is the acting president of, KAUST’s Maker Space SDG. He has co-authored and co-hosted several WEP courses in 2016 and 2017.
